The workshop, “Flood Contingency Plan Formulation for Iligan City” will take place on 18-22 November 2013 in Legazpi City, Albay. During the five-day activity, participants coming from the Iligan City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (IDRRMC) and the city’s other departments will work on the actual formulation of the city’s flood contingency plan. The workshop will be spearheaded by Project Climate Twin Phoenix, a project implemented by the Climate Change Commission (CCC) and with support and technical assistance from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Australian Government.

Taking off from the first workshop held last October of this year, the participants will use recently gathered and actual data from the field as inputs during the plan formulation. These data include the city’s risk profile, inventory of geohazard-compliant evacuation sites and spaces that can be used as evacuation areas, inventory of existing resources for early recovery and rehabilitations, and existing policies and ordinances pertaining to disaster planning, response, rehabilitation and recovery, among others.

The workshop includes three modules which will focus on flood contingency planning process and format, its actual formulation and the guidelines and procedures for feedback and upgrading. The participants will also go on an exposure trip in the city to visit Albay’s climate change and disaster risk reduction and management project sites.

The workshop is being conducted in the framework of the CCC program “Enabling the cities of Cagayan De Oro and Iligan and the provinces of Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental to cope with climate change” implemented by Project Climate Twin Phoenix to put in place a long-term capacity development programme for cities and municipalities, addressing disaster risks from climate change and other related natural hazards.
