The tsunami which struck the coast of Tamil Nadu due to a very severe earthquake measuring magnitude of M9.0 near northern Sumatra, Indonesia at 00:58:50 UTC on 26.12.2004 had a widespread impact on fishing villages and towns all along the coastline of Tamil Nadu. A calamity of this nature had never been known in this State as evidenced by the death toll of over 8000 human lives and by the thousands of people rendered homeless. It totally damaged the entire coastal economy of Tamil Nadu. These guidelines deal with general provisions to be followed during construction of houses considering multi hazard perspective. A separate detailed technical guidelines is also being brought out.
