Guidelines for reducing flood losses

Source
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR)

These guidelines are oriented to the needs of the decision-makers and provide a description of the range of mitigation options that need to be considered when making efforts to reduce losses from flooding. They are designed to introduce the reader to various measures to mitigate the impacts associated with floods. Includes four case-studies annexed: 1) Practical experiences in preparing a community for a disaster in the Philippines, 2) Policy commitment to flood risk reduction in sADC Member states, 3) A disaster awareness and response instructional programme for people at the local level in Vietnam, 4) The RANET project, aiming at making climate and weather related information more accessible to rural populations and communities in Africa. A bibliography is provided that cites detailed material available for the planning and implementation stages. (UNEsCO)
