Haitians talk about rebuilding the country after the January 12, 2010 earthquake
This document reports on an opinion poll undertaken with the objective of defining Haitians' perception (from diverse social classes) on several topics related to the post-earthquake situation. It is intended to help develop advocacy and appeal tools in order to help local, state, and non-state actors take ownership of post-earthquake reconstruction processes.
It shows that Haitians have little confidence in their government's ability to rebuild the country alone. Among the key findings, it also highlights that Haitians’ top priorities for reconstruction are (in order of priority): jobs, schools, shelter, and a strong agricultural sector; and that the top four problems now (in order of severity) are: unemployment, corruption, violence and insecurity, and irresponsibility of the government.
The poll provides information from different social groups that can be used to determine points of consensus on issues related to the reconstruction of the country. It was carried out by an independent Haitian polling consultant and funded and sponsored by Oxfam within the context of its advocacy activities in order to promote the participation of all the nation's key sectors in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the plan for the reconstruction of the country that was severely destroyed by the January 12 earthquake.
Publisher's note: the opinions reported reflect Haitians’ perception at this particular period of time, opinions that could change at any given moment depending on the how the situation and the actors’ behavior evolve. They are not Oxfam’s opinions.
