Science for disaster risk reduction and response: role of the Commission's in-house science service
The brochure provides an outline of relevant Joint Research Centre (JRC)'s projects and activities in disaster resilience, in particular prevention and preparedness measures, in collaboration with the European Commission's Monitoring and Information Centre (the operational heart of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism) and with national and international partners on crisis management technologies, analysis and application of remote sensing data, natural hazard modelling, information mining/analysis for vulnerability assessments and civil engineering.
The brochure describes the science and technology services of the European Commission intended to improve disaster risk reduction in support of the EU’s resilience to disasters: (i) being prepared for disasters, including enhance the safety of buildings, protecting critical infrastructures and preventing industrial accidents; (ii) monitoring, forecasting and alerting disasters, through disaster early warning for earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, volcanoes and tropical cyclones, as well as drought, floods and forest fires monitoring; and (iii) responding to disasters, including recovery.
