Since 2004 Cordaid has been supporting 100 southern partner organizations and the communities they work with in 10 countries in Asia, Africa and latin America. Between those countries, the risks addressed differ: from landslides to volcanoes, and from droughts to floods.
Partners are trained in DRR, and in turn they train communities.
Cordaid has developed a range of specific tailor made approaches, process and tools in DRR
- Integrated risk management ( DRR-CCA-EMR= Ecosystem management and restoration)
- Urban Resilience ( multi stakeholder process, using serious gaming for resilience)
- District resilience ( training modules for district governments on how to integrate resilience )
- Resilient recovery: manual & tools for integrating resilience in recovery programming.
- measuring resilience ( tools and manual on measuring resilience ; in final stage of development)

Currently, Cordaid is aiming to mainstream DRR in all its programme sectors: Humanitarian aid, governance and services, economic opportunities, security and justice.
After major disasters Cordaid often offers training on integrating DRR in recovery open for Caritas members and other national- local partners.

PDRA participatory risk assessment and analysis is part of all DRR programs regardless of the target stakeholders. Partners facilitate this process with communities, using different tools to analyze hazards, vulnerabilities and capacities of people. Examples of such tools are conducting a hazard history, making a hazard map with local materials (leaves, sticks, stones etc), filming of hazards and vulnerabilities by community members etc.
Early warning: Cordaid developed a program linking government and communities with new communication technologies for early warning and information exchange after disaster. It is piloted in Bangladesh.

Through the participatory risk assessment community members become aware of the risks threatening them and what they can do to reduce those risks.
Climate change is disucssed in this perocess.

Cordaid resilience unit has capacity to offer training and workshop facilitation in CMDRR ( handbook for trainers available) , integrated risk management, Urban resilience and has a lot of supporting materials and tools on DRR.

Underlying risk factors are reduced by community action plans, community organization and linking with the government. Community action plans fill the capacity gaps identified during the risk assessment. They are designed and implemented by community members. The intervening NGO takes a facilitating role in this, but is not the main actor, this is the community itself.
Once there is some progress in community action plans & organisation they can link ot their government and this may include ( advocacy for) adressing underlying risk factors. In Linking our DRR to development programming underlying risks sometimes can be adressed.

Cordaid implements a disaster preparedness and response capacity program for country offices and partners with a specific manual and tools.
The humanitarian unit offers training and facilitation for organisational preparedness, joint contingeny planning and organisational development for improved response.

Participatory monitoring, evaluation and learning system. Learning feeds into improved and new program development.

Lobby & advocacy on resilience including as member of DRR working group Voice and as member of partners for resilience.
