Global expo: reducing risk in the South
This article summarizes the deliberations and presentations held at the Global South-South Development (GSSD) Expo 2013 and the AIDMI partnership forum focusing on South-South Cooperation at the local level in two areas: (i) scaling up the South-South Citizenry-Based Development Academies (SSCBDA), which enhanced understanding of Southern issues on disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation, including 'green' recovery and safer development across 200 organizations from South and Southeast Asia; and (ii) a programme on pollution management and environmental health.
The paper captures in a table a number of relevant development approaches currently being practiced in the Global South and highlights a demand from Cambodia, Brazil, China, Thailand, and Nepal for AIDMI to play an active role in integrating disaster risk reduction with development. The expo was hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) at Nairobi, Kenya from 28 October to November 1, 2013.
