Disaster planning and community resilience: The Christchurch experience
Since September 2010, Christchurch New Zealand has experienced four major earthquakes and hundreds of aftershocks at a magnitude of 4.0 or greater. This activity has challenged conventional planning practices and required new priorities and ways of collaborating. The presentation will illustrate how sudden and dramatic change to the natural, built and economic environment of a city can radically alter the context in which planners work. After nearly two years of significant seismic activity, Christchurch is well into the recovery phase. What lessons have been learned so far, and will Christchurch set a new best-practice standard for disaster recovery and community resilience? Join Senior Planner Adam Fort of Christchurch City Council to find out and be part of the dialogue about planning for resilience.
