Mission

The Swiss Federal Office for Civil Protection (FOCP) supports the cantons and municipalities as well as the partner organisations in their civil protection activities. With the creation of the FOCP in 2003, all areas of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS), which specialise in civil protection issues were grouped together. The FOCP coordinates disaster management activities among the partner organisations.

Risk assessment and early warning systems (HFA 2)

- The FOCP coordinates the National Disaster Risk Analysis
- The FOCP coordinates the warning system for natural hazards
- The FOCP is responsible for the national alerting system

Education, information and public awareness (HFA 3)

- The FOCP implements a national project to improve and foster the preparedness on the individual level

Preparedness for effective response (HFA 5)

- The FOCP implements the Strategy for Civil Protection 2015+
- The FOCP coordinates the implementation of the National Strategy of Critical Infrastructur Protection
- The FOCP educates the response forcers and supports the cantons and municipalities in exercises and training events
- The FOCP develops small and large scale evacuation plans
- The FOCP runs the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC)

Making Cities Resilient Campaign Activities

The FOCP initiated a research project together with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology ETH Zurich regarding disaster management in different cities of the world.

The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
