Mission
UNOSAT is the United Nations Satellite Centre, with a mandate to provide United Nations funds, programmes and specialized agencies with satellite analysis, training and capacity development, at their request, as well as to support Member States with satellite imagery analysis over their respective territories and to provide training and capacity development in the use of geospatial information technologies, on the basis of voluntary contributions.
UNOSAT’s mission is to promote evidence-based decision making for peace, security and resilience using geo-spatial information technologies. It is a people centred programme of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). It has provided space-based solutions and capacity development to UN agencies, their implementing partners and Governments since 2001 and is active in crisis response, sustainable recovery, vulnerability reduction and territorial planning.
UNOSAT works with a wide community of users in the humanitarian and development spheres, and partners with national and regional actors across the world to implement DRR activities. Since 2003, UNOSAT operates a Rapid Mapping service available 24/7 that provides satellite image analysis during humanitarian emergencies related to disasters, complex emergencies and conflict situations.
Voluntary Commitments
The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
