Disaster management in India

This book captures the measures undertaken and the systems established for disaster management in India. It also articulates the next steps required. It is intended to be used by disaster management practitioners to promote collaborative efforts to reduce disaster risk in the country. It is the outcome of a Ministry of Home Affairs in-house compilation and analysis of information relating to disasters and their management gathered from different sources: domestic, UN and other agencies.

The book includes: (i) an overview of disasters in India, including the vulnerability and climate profiles of the country; (ii) the institutional framework in place; (iii) the different policies and guidelines available; (iv) the prevention and mitigation measures taken for earthquakes, cyclones, floods, landslides, tsunamis, droughts, fires, chemical disasters and epidemics, among others; (v) the institutional arrangements for preparedness and response; (vi) recovery, reconstruction and rehabilitation guiding principles; (vii) capacity development approaches; (viii) financial arrangements; (ix) internal cooperation; and (x) the way forward.
