Nepal: Rural Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Sector Development Program

The 2015 earthquakes had significant socio-economic impacts on Kirtipur Municipality, a historic town in Nepal.

The elderly and children were the most affected, though there was no significant gender difference in casualties. Core areas like Panga and Chovar, with century-old houses lacking disaster-resistant technologies, were severely impacted. Initially, there was strong social bonding and cohesion during rescue and relief phases. However, political transitions, financial constraints, and social factors led to family separations during recovery and reconstruction phases.

The community showed resilience, with local efforts playing a crucial role in immediate response and long-term recovery.This study underscores the importance of local-level preparedness and community involvement in disaster response and recovery.
