Flooding in Western Province post-disaster needs assessment report: Papua New Guinea, April to July 2024

This post-disaster needs assessment documents the impacts of prolonged flooding in Western Province, Papua New Guinea, between April and July 2024. Conducted jointly by the National Disaster Centre, the UN Humanitarian Advisory Team and partners, it assesses humanitarian impacts across 60 flood-affected villages and one temporary care centre, covering approximately 55,000 affected people.

The report presents findings across water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), food security, health, shelter, education and protection. It identifies widespread contamination of water sources, food insecurity caused by damaged gardens, health risks from waterborne and vector-borne diseases, displacement, damage to housing and schools, and increased protection concerns. The assessment provides estimated sectoral caseloads together with immediate relief priorities and longer-term recommendations to strengthen recovery and resilience.

The assessment supports evidence-based recovery planning by identifying priority interventions, resource requirements and resilience-building measures for flood-affected communities. It highlights the importance of coordinated recovery, improved infrastructure, stronger community resilience and long-term adaptation to recurrent flooding in Western Province.
