The Dealing with Disasters Conference 2011 will take place on Monday 28th and Tuesday 29th of November in Cardiff’s Maldron Hotel. The theme of this year’s conference is Reflections on Recent Disasters: The Past 10 Years.

Conference Focus

Over the last ten years disasters continued to have local, regional and global impacts on civilisation. The Disasters Emergency Committee has recently warned that the world should expect three to five big urban disasters in the next 10 years and that the 950 million people who live in urban slums worldwide are particularly vulnerable to a disaster.

What lessons can we learn from our experiences of the last decade of disasters, that can be applied to promote resilience, optimise response and speed the recovery process and post event restoration?

The conference, jointly organised by the University of Glamorgan, the University of Sunderland and Northumbria University is directly relevant to a range of stakeholders, such as charities, non government organisations and others involved in responding to disasters as well as academic researchers. By bringing together delegates from this broad spectrum of organisations research and practice can be informed by real life experience and sharing cutting edge ideas for dealing with disaster.

Conference Themes

1. Environmental disasters and the findings from interventions
2. Transport, industrial and other man-made disasters and the implications for planning
3. Conflict as a disaster and the implications
4. Risk, vulnerability, poverty and development: the inter-relationships
5. Impacts of disasters on travel and tourism and ensuing mobilities
