Mission
IDS is a leading global organization for research, teaching and communications on international development. Our vision is a world in which poverty does not exist, social justice prevails and economic growth is focused on improving human wellbeing. We believe that research knowledge can drive the change that must happen in order for this vision to be realised. The research programmes are organized in six closely linked multidisciplinary teams: globalization; governance; knowledge, technology and society; participation, power and social change; vulnerability and poverty reduction; climate change.
The main goal of the work on DRR is to support research, advice and capacity building for people in poor countries, especially (but not only) in the context of climate related hazards and climate change by:
- promoting the links between development, adaptation and disaster risk reduction.
- linking Climate Smart Disaster Risk Management and Adaptice Social Protection.
- exploring current framings and concepts in the context of climate change, such as resilience, the problems of downscaling and its validity, culture and disasters, the gap between DRR priorities and peoples' eveyday 'development' priorities, the political economy of climate change.
1. The Strengthening Climate Resilience project supports an innovative approach to reduce vulnarability to natural disasters and climate change by supporting governments and civil society organisations. This is called 'Climate-Smart Disaster Risk Management'. This project is managed by a consortium of Institute for Development Studies, Christian Aid and Plan International. It operates in 10 countries in Asia and Africa.

2. Climate and Disaster Governance
CDG investigated opportunities for integrating climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction at the national and sub-national level. The programme seeks to identify governance options which could help to reduce climate and disaster risk to poor communities and keep development on track. A collaborative research initiative aimed at supporting policy-makers and civil society organisations engaged in disaster and climate-resilient development at every scale.
3. Children in a Changing Climate
A coalition of leading child-focused research, development and humanitarian organisations each with a commitment to share knowledge, coordinate activities and work with children as agents of change. Committed to effective protection and meaningful participation of children and young people in our changing climate. The coalition began in 2007 and continues to host events and disseminate research, through film, print and online media, highlighting the importance of child-centred disaster risk reduction and climate change prevention and adaptation.

Voluntary Commitments
The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
