Purpose of Workshop/ skills taught/ methodology

The purpose of the DRM workshop is to develop practical skills for humanitarian/relief practitioners who are involved in initiatives across the Disaster Risk Management Cycle (DRMC) spectrum , as well as to provide knowledge of broader DRM issues and best practice scenarios.
This is a practically-based intensive workshop which combines both classroom teaching and, for those seeking advanced standing, follow-up assignments. The program includes case studies from the Asia-Pacific Region (eg the 2010 Fiji Cyclone; the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami; the 1998 PNG Aitape Tsunami; the 1997 PNG drought); and the current Pacific Island Countries Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)
and Disaster Management Framework for Action 2005-2015.

Workshop itinerary

The DRM is an intensive three day workshop including the following modules:

- Module 3: Emergency Response & Recovery Issues.
- Modules 4/5: The 2004 Indian Ocean and PNG 1998 Tsunami Case Studies
- Module 6: Psycho-social Support & Community Well-being Recovery
- Module 7: Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)
- Module 8: Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) # 2
- Module 9: Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) # 3
- Module 10 : The 1997 PNG Drought Case Study and the El Niño – Southern Oscillation phenomenon
- Modules 11/12: Key Disaster Risk Management (DRM) Issues
- Module 13: DRM Project Management Issues
- Module 14: DRM Security Management & Human Resource Management Issues
- Module 15: DRM Humanitarian Standards & Codes of Conduct
- Module 16: Review and Critique of recent disasters in the Pacific Region
- Module 17: Key Disaster Risk Management (DRM) Issues
