Disaster Reduction Goal

Kobe University is the only comprehensive and national university that was located in the epicentral area of the 1995 Kobe Earthquake. Based on her experience, the University is committed to build a safe and secure urban city from the earthquake disaster by employing an integrated DRR approach through socio, natural, human, and life sciences expertise.
After the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE), the University is taking its lead to support the recovery of Tohoku regions by cooperating with Tohoku University. The Office for the Reconstruction Support and the Research of Disaster Science at Kobe University is actively engaged in various recovery activities of the GEJE.
On November 3, 2012, the office co-hosted a symposium with Tohoku University. It was held at Kobe University Integrated Research Center on the theme of From Kobe to Tohoku: Learning From and Building Upon Our Past Experiences.
The office has been both supporting groups that are engaging in reconstruction activities at the suffered areas and working with other universities and municipal governments in the Tohoku region. During the academic year of 2012, the office subsidized sixteen researches and activities at Kobe University, all of which were engaged in the reconstruction or research in Disaster Science. We will continue to investigate what are needed in the suffered areas to offer support based on the lessons we learned through the discovery from the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake.

Voluntary Commitments

The organization has no registered commitments.

The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
