Mission

ESCAP is the regional development arm of the United Nations for the Asia-Pacific region.

With a membership of 62 Governments, 58 of which are in the region, and a geographical scope that stretches from Turkey in the west to the Pacific island nation of Kiribati in the east, and from the Russian Federation in the north to New Zealand in the south, ESCAP is the most comprehensive of the United Nations five regional commissions.

DRR activities

Achievement 1:

Launch of ESCAP’s flagship publication Asia Pacific Disaster Report, 2025

Launch of the 3rd Generation of the ESCAP Asia Pacific Risk and Resilience Portal  

Achievement 3:

Implemented the full operational rollout of SATGPT, an AI‑powered system that automates flood‑hotspot mapping and enables production of real‑time and historical flood maps within minutes — substantially enhancing disaster‑risk analysis and decision-making. In 2025, 256 stakeholders across the Asia‑Pacific region were trained to use the tool and integrate it into their respective agency workflows.

Ocean accounting for disaster resilience in the Pacific SIDS: A brief note for policymakers

A new UNESCAP report analyses the impact of disasters on SIDS and maps out the impact on a cluster of SDGs. While the Pacific SIDS are heavily reliant on ocean resources, most of the disasters that affect them are oceanogenic. To build resilient SIDS, there is a need to connect the dots - science, geospatial data, statistics, and policy interfaces.

Voluntary Commitments

The organization has no registered commitments.

The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
