Droughts in Angola 2012-2016 Post Disaster Needs Assessment

This PDNA examines the impact of the prolonged drought from 2012 to 2016 in Angola on the three southern provinces Cunene, Namibe and Huíla. These three provinces were considered the most affected by the 2015-2016 rainfall deficits. The drought in Angola has evolved against the backdrop of the country’s worst oil crisis. Its economy has been severely affected by the sharp decline in oil prices since mid-2014.

In the drought-affected areas, there were rising trends in admission cases of malnutrition, of family abandonment, domestic violence, charcoal production, as well as increasing deforestation and the continued depletion of water resources in the region.

After providing the socio-economic context of Angola and the affected regions, this PDNA covers an impact analysis for each sector, as well as damage and losses. Key lines of intervention for the recovery strategy, including a recovery strategy for each of the three provinces, are provided in the later sections of the PDNA.
