Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Emergency Response and Recovery Program. Six-month Report 2011

It is now six months since a major earthquake and tsunami hit the northeastern coast of Japan on March 11. The scale of this disaster, compounded by the subsequent nuclear crisis in Fukushima, was unprecedented.

The government of Japan met many of the population's needs but quickly became thinly stretched - and Save the Children stepped in to fill the gaps, addressing the specific needs of children. Save the Children has provided direct support to children and their families through provision of important services as well as basic materials, and has also met needs indirectly, working with community groups on the ground who are closest to affected communities.

Save the Children's 6 months-on report provides an overview of the initial emergency response and successes to date, along with an outline of the recovery program that will span over five years.
