Household Economy Analysis (HEA) Livelihood Assessment in Türkiye: Earthquake Impact and Recoverey

Source
Save the Children International

This HEA study investigated the extent of post-earthquake recovery in the disaster zone by measuring the basic components of household livelihoods - food, income and expenditure - and by assessing gaps between income earned and income needed to meet basic needs. This analysis also showed to what extent households remain reliant on humanitarian aid to meet certain expenditure targets (i.e., the MEB).

HEA involves quantifying how households obtain their food and income, and how they spend money to meet their basic needs. Data reflects a specific reference period, in this case, July-December 2023. 10 sample sites were selected across 4 provinces in the disaster area (Gaziantep, Hatay, Adiyaman, and Kahramanmaras). The sample sites selected were mainly in container settlements with a focus on the Turkish population displaced by the earthquakes.

The very poor comprised an estimated 20-40% of households and the poor about 10-30% of households in the sample sites. In each of these very poor and poor wealth groups, roughly 20% were femaleheaded households (FHH). FHH were in all wealth categories, but concentrated amongst the very poor/poor.
