This guide first lays out the relevant building codes in force in Colombia for small and medium scale construction projects. Subsequent sections discuss factors affecting earthquake vulnerability of masonry structures and mitigation strategies, factors in earthquake resistant design including geo-engineering, structural design, construction materials, and building techniques and practices. Use of reinforced versus unreinforced masonry is presented, as are risks associated with specific structural elements (beams, slabs, roofs) and good practices in electrical and water systems. The guide also covers repair, reinforcement and rebuilding of damaged masonry structures.
