The PDNA of the 2014 Pico do Fogo volcanic eruption aims at providing the country of Cabo Verde with an assessment based on an internationally accepted methodology for resource and partnership mobilization in order to effectively recover and reconstruct after a disaster event. It is the result of efforts made by the Government of Cabo Verde and its international partners.
As a technical and resource mobilization document, the PDNA defines the areas of intervention, the strategy and the medium and long term objectives, for all the economic and social sectors as well as cross-cutting issues such as gender and environment. With this document the Cabinet of Reconstruction of Fogo will be able to fulfill its objective of producing an action plan for the recovery, and the empowerment of families through specific programs of development of the productive sector (agriculture, livestock, agribusiness, tourism etc.) and the infrastructure of the new settlement (sectors: Health, Education / Sports, Social and Cultural) aiming at reducing risk of disasters of the population.
The eruption of the Pico do Fogo volcano began on 23rd of November 2014 and continued until February 8th, 2015. By the end of the eruption, the lava had covered an era of approximately 520 ha with an average 8-meter height lava wall. The 88 days of intense and effusive eruption culminated in the total destruction of all houses and community infrastructures of the localities of Portela and Bangaeira - Chã das Caldeiras, forcing the evacuation and displacement of 994 people.
