Report by the Director-General on UNESCO's post-earthquake response in Haiti

Source
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)

This document on UNESCO’s effort in assisting Haiti after the 12 January 2010 earthquake addresses both relief and reconstruction. It seeks to bridge emergency activities to support longer-term, nationally owned development in education, tangible and intangible heritage, disaster risk reduction and media and press freedom. It also includes planning and preparedness ahead of the impending rainy season, including for education, disaster risk reduction, and other early recovery priorities.

It asserts that the natural disaster early warning capabilities of the Government of Haiti have been severely damaged or destroyed, and that UNESCO is engaging in efforts to help contribute to the rebuilding of Haiti, notably through the organization of the UNESCO Haiti Forum on “Rebuilding the Social, Cultural and Intellectual Fabric of Haiti”, held on 24 March at UNESCO Headquarters, with the participation of the Minister of Culture and Communication of Haiti.
