Supporting community recovery and risk reduction in Yogyakarta

Source
International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC)

Case study:

This paper advocates for decisions to be made and programmes designed in order to strengthen a community’s capacity to cope with the impact of disasters and to reduce their vulnerability to future hazards and shocks during the early stages of an emergency response after a disaster strikes. It emphasizes awareness of the importance of earthquake-resistant construction after an earthquake. It looks especially at the May 2006 earthquake in Yogyakarta and Central Java in Indonesia for which an early recovery programme that capitalized on this heightened awareness was designed by IFRC to draw on and strengthen the affected communities’ own disaster resilience and capacities for recovery.
