Our centre promotes and coordinates research on soil degradation and desertification in dryland regions all over the world. The International Centre for Eremology is situated at Ghent University, Belgium, and offers a research base for a number of scientists and students. From the base, various research, educational and exchange projects are organised in many dryland countries distributed over all continents.
Since 2008, the International Centre for Eremology received the honour to act as UNESCO chair on Eremology. The foundation of this UNESCO Chair was a result of ICE's longstanding cooperation with and support to UNESCO scientists through a science dedicated Trust Fund (Flanders/Belgium). The UNESCO Chair for Eremology opens possibilities for international cooperation and projects related the actual problems of climate change, causes of desertification and land degradation, and means and ways to combat desertification.
The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
