Thinking Development

Thinking Development is an innovative and collaborative design project that has emerged in response to the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. It gathers the intellectual resources of the extended University College London community, the architectural and engineering industry, and our Haitian colleagues to re-develop a site in central Port-au-Prince - thoughtfully.
OUR MISSION is to develop a passive and replicable model for reconstructing Haiti’s collapsed schools to reflect local needs and ambitions, meet density requirements, be locally buildable, cheap and sustainable.
OUR PROJECT is to develop a master plan for phased reconstruction of Centre Rosalie, a destroyed girls’ school in Port-au-Prince. The master plan is based on a simple classroom module that is replicated in phases, and that could ultimately be replicated all over the city.
*Ensure that disaster response and transitional shelter is conducive to long-term resilience and development
*Bridge the gap between research and practise through process documentation
*Lead by example to ensure that future disaster victims are not forced to accept damaging aid.
The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
