International Recovery Platform

This document looks at the five years of international cooperation and political will following the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. It draws lessons learned on the development and consolidation of tsunami and other sea level related hazard warning systems, striving to consolidate global coverage and international development, and to include disaster risk reduction initiatives within recovery and reconstruction activities and, more generally, within development strategies.

This book addresses the growing demand for reconstruction at scale following devastating impact of disasters on the world's population on the increase, influenced by climate change, urbanization, and persistent high levels of poverty, among other factors

This briefing note advocates for a sustained international reconstruction effort which will effectively translate into a new start for Haiti, and which would meet the country’s long-term development needs. It particularly calls to integrate disaster risk
