Critical Infrastructure

This report extends the focus of the UNISDR-PwC initiative, looking specifically at the long-term opportunity for public-private sector collaboration in building or rebuilding risk-resilient infrastructure. It describes why building disaster-resilient infrastructure is critical for a region’s competitiveness, both nationally and globally. It also illustrates how the private sector can offer innovative solutions to help communities build or rebuild disaster-resilient infrastructure.

This report relates the experiences of those who survived the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami using information gathered at a workshop which included field visits and interviews with local representatives.

This study documents IFRC’s response and recovery operation in the aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Over 4.8 million people benefited from a wide range of Red Cross Red Crescent support that included reconstruction of physical infrastructure such as homes, schools and health facilities as well as long-term recovery and disaster risk reduction programming. It reflects the scale of what is recorded as the deadliest tsunami in history – one that swept through coastal areas of Indonesia, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Thailand, and ten other Indian Ocean countries.

Public facilities and infrastructure can be built in such a way as to reduce disaster risks and serve as disaster risk management facilities. This document is a knowledge note for structural measures of Multifunctional Structures.
